BAYOU PLAQUEMINE TRAIN BRIDGE

Construction of the current train bridge crossing Bayou Plaquemine was begun in 1920 and was completed in 1921. The more modern articulating, riveted iron and concrete structure, replaced the first fixed Train Bridge which was built in 1881. Today the bridge, still a vital link for frequent rail traffic through the city, no longer opens for the once busy barge traffic on the bayou, and stands in a state of utter disrepair. The huge gears and hinges, levers and switches, once used to operate it are forever frozen in time, and stand as a monument to a long gone era of Backroads history. This rustic local landmark is unique in its design, and offers a willing explorer a unique opportunity to see its many textures, angles, and warm rich hues. It is truly a Backroads Jem in the Rough.
